Quick Summary

The Bicystar FJ-BMX02 is a 14" and 16" kids' BMX-style bike with a dual braking system — rear coaster brake and front hand brake. Maximum rider weight is 150 lbs.

Assembly covers 9 steps: training wheels or kickstand, front wheel, handlebar and stem, pedals, seat, tire inflation, brakes, reflectors, and a pre-ride safety check.

The three steps that matter most: pedals go on specific sides, the stem insertion mark must be fully hidden, and both brakes must be tested before the first ride.

Assembly Steps

Follow these 9 steps in order. Each step matches the assembly video and the PDF manual.

1

Training Wheels or Kickstand

⚠️

Important: The inner axle nut holds the rear wheel in place. Never loosen or remove it. Only remove the outer nut.

Option A — Training Wheels (Both Sizes)

  1. Locate the rear axle. Use your 15mm wrench to remove the outer nut only. Set it aside.
  2. Find the square alignment tab on the training wheel bracket. Slide it into the slot on the frame, then push the bracket onto the axle.
  3. Replace the outer nut and tighten firmly. Repeat on the other side.
✅
Check: Both training wheels point straight down, sit ¼ inch (6mm) off the ground on each side, and do not wobble.

Option B — Kickstand (16" Model Only)

  1. Locate the left rear axle. Remove the outer nut using your 15mm wrench.
  2. Align the kickstand bracket tab with the frame slot and slide onto the axle.
  3. Replace the outer nut and tighten firmly.
✅
Check: Kickstand swings freely and holds the bike upright on flat ground.
2

Front Wheel

  1. Check the tire sidewall for a direction arrow. If present, position the wheel so the arrow points forward.
  2. Place the wheel into the fork, seating it evenly on both sides.
  3. Slide the retaining washers back onto the axle. The tabs on the washers must face the fork and fit into the small holes on each side.
  4. Tighten both axle nuts firmly with your wrench.
✅
Check: Grab the wheel and wiggle it side to side. Zero movement means it is secure. Any movement — re-tighten before riding.
⚠️

A loose front wheel can come off during riding. This check is critical before the first ride.

3

Handlebar & Stem

  1. Loosen the stem bolt at the top of the stem 2–3 turns. Do not remove it completely.
  2. Pull the plastic shipping cap off the bottom of the stem.
  3. Insert the stem into the fork tube and push down until the minimum insertion mark is completely hidden inside the tube.
  4. Align the handlebars straight with the front wheel. Tighten the stem bolt firmly.
  5. To adjust handlebar angle: loosen the front clamp bolt, rotate to a comfortable position, center the bar, and tighten.
ℹ️

Stem tightness test: Straddle the front wheel and try turning the handlebars. They should not move independently of the wheel. Handlebar tightness test: Try pushing the bar ends up, down, forward, and back. No movement means it is correctly tightened.

✅
Check: Insertion mark fully hidden. Handlebars do not move independently. Bar ends do not shift in any direction.
4

Pedals

⚠️

This is the step people get wrong most often. Installing a pedal on the wrong side causes permanent, irreparable damage to the crank arm.

  1. Find the marking at the base of each pedal thread. "R" = right side, tighten clockwise. "L" = left side, tighten counter-clockwise.
  2. Start each pedal by hand. If it does not thread smoothly — stop. Back it out and try again.
  3. Once hand-tight, tighten firmly with your wrench. The pedal base should sit flush against the crank arm.
✅
Check: Both pedals are flush against the crank arm and do not wobble. Re-check pedal bolts after the first ride.
5

Seat Height

  1. Flip the quick-release lever to open. Slide the seatpost into the frame tube with the seat pointing straight forward.
  2. Push down until the minimum insertion marks are fully hidden inside the frame.
  3. Set height: beginners should have both feet flat on the ground. Intermediate riders — toes touch the ground. Advanced — slight knee bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
  4. Hand-tighten the adjustment nut on the opposite side of the lever, then push the lever firmly to the closed position. It will feel stiff halfway — that is correct.
✅
Check: Try to twist the seat and push it down. Neither should move. If they do, open the lever, tighten the nut slightly more, and re-close.
6

Tire Inflation

  1. Inflate both tires to the PSI printed on the tire sidewall using any standard pump.
  2. As you inflate, check the tire bead — the edge where the tire meets the rim — is seated evenly all the way around.
  3. If the bead looks uneven: release air, press it into place, then re-inflate slowly.
✅
Check: Both tires feel firm. Bead is even all the way around on both sides of both rims.
⚠️

Never exceed the maximum PSI printed on the tire sidewall.

7

Brakes

Coaster Brake — Rear (Primary)

Nothing to install. Built into the rear wheel hub. To activate: pedal backward. The harder the backward pedal, the stronger the braking. This is the main brake for young riders.

Hand Brake — Front (Secondary)

  1. Check that brake pads sit flat against the rim — not touching the tire above, not below the rim edge.
  2. Squeeze the lever. The front wheel should stop completely.
  3. When released, pads should spring back with approximately 1/16 inch (1.5mm) clearance on each side.
ℹ️

If the lever feels loose or spongy: Loosen the cable nut at the caliper, pull the cable snug, re-tighten, adjust the barrel adjuster for 1/16" pad clearance, and retest.

✅
Check: Pedaling backward stops the rear wheel. Squeezing the lever stops the front wheel completely. Test both before every ride.
8

Reflectors & Accessories

⚠️

Reflectors are required by federal law (CPSC 16 CFR 1512). Never remove the front or rear reflectors.

Front Reflector (White)

  1. Slide the bracket onto the handlebar. Reflector face must point forward. Tighten the clamp screw.

Rear Reflector (Red)

  1. Slide the bracket onto the seatpost below the seat. Reflector face must point rearward. Tighten the clamp screw.

Accessories

  1. Stem cap: Press over the stem connection point until it snaps into place.
  2. Bell: Slide the bracket onto the handlebar and tighten the clamp screw.
  3. Number plate: Position on the handlebar, attach brackets with the Phillips screwdriver, tighten, and verify the plate does not press against any cables.
✅
Check: White reflector faces forward. Red reflector faces rearward. Wheel and pedal reflectors are pre-installed — check none are loose or missing.
9

Pre-Ride Safety Check

Run this check before every ride. It takes about two minutes.

A — Air

  1. Tires feel firm when squeezed.
  2. Tire bead is seated evenly on both rims.

B — Brakes

  1. Pedal backward — rear wheel stops.
  2. Squeeze lever — front wheel stops completely.

C — Chain and Cranks

  1. Chain sits on the rear sprocket and moves smoothly when pedaling forward.
  2. Pedals are tight with no wobble.
ℹ️

Before your child gets on: Helmet fitted and covering the forehead. Closed-toe shoes. No loose clothing near the chain. Flat, clear riding area. Adult supervision present. Child knows how to use both brakes.

FAQ

Do I need special tools to assemble this bike?
No. You need a 10mm, 13mm, and 15mm wrench, plus a Phillips screwdriver. All are standard household tools.
The pedal won't thread in smoothly. What should I do?
Stop immediately. Back the pedal out completely and check that you have the correct pedal on the correct side. The right pedal (R) threads clockwise. The left pedal (L) threads counter-clockwise. Start again by hand. If it still won't thread smoothly, contact us before forcing it — forced threading causes permanent damage.
How high should I set the seat for my child?
For a first-time rider, set it low enough that both feet rest flat on the ground. This gives the most control and confidence. Raise it gradually as they improve — check the height about once a month.
The hand brake lever feels loose when I squeeze it. How do I fix it?
The brake cable needs to be tightened. Loosen the cable nut at the front caliper, pull the cable snug, and re-tighten. Use the barrel adjuster to fine-tune pad clearance to about 1/16 inch on each side. Full instructions are in Step 7 above.
Does the 14-inch model come with a kickstand?
No. The kickstand is included with the 16-inch model only. The 14-inch model includes training wheels, a bell, reflectors, and a racing number plate.
My training wheels wobble after installation. What did I miss?
The outer nut is likely not tight enough. Also check that the square alignment tab on the bracket is fully seated in the frame slot before tightening. If the problem continues after re-tightening, contact us at anita@bicystar.com.
